Overview & Highlights
Katavi National Park is Tanzania's wildest frontier — an untamed 4,471 km² sanctuary tucked inside a truncated arm of the Western Rift Valley. Fed by the seasonal Katuma River, which links the shallow expanses of Lake Katavi and Lake Chada across the vast Katisunga Floodplain, the park transforms dramatically during the dry season (July to October). As the floodwaters recede into shrinking mud wallows, up to 6,000 hippos cram into single pools in fierce territorial battles, giant Nile crocodiles excavate mud caves along the riverbanks, and mega-herds of up to 3,000 Cape buffalo are stalked by massive prides of lions and spotted hyenas. Receiving fewer than 1,500 visitors per year, Katavi delivers raw, pre-colonial Africa in complete solitude.

Highlights & Key Activities
- Hundreds of hippos jammed into the shrinking Ikuu Bridge and Katuma River pools
- Giant Nile crocodiles hibernating inside riverbank mud caves during peak dry months
- Mega-herds of 1,000+ Cape buffalo kicking up dust clouds across the Katisunga Plains
- Sacred Tamarind Tree of the spirit Katabi beside Lake Katavi
What We Love
- Astounding dry-season concentrations of hippos, crocodiles, and mega-herds of buffalo
- Virtually zero crowds — often only a handful of guests in the entire 4,471 km² park
- Thrilling predator action as lions and hyenas shadow the shrinking waterholes
- Roan and sable antelopes alongside up to 4,000 elephants
- Seamless charter flight pairing with Mahale Mountains chimpanzee trekking
Keep in Mind
- Remote Western Circuit location requires expensive charter flights
- Very hot in September and October; persistent tsetse flies in wooded belts

Best Time & Climate
Katavi is strictly a dry-season destination (June to October). The later in the dry season you visit (August–October), the more concentrated and dramatic the wildlife scenes become.
☀️ Dry Season
June to October — Shrinking water sources pull all wildlife into the Katuma River and Lake Chada floodplains.
🌧️ Wet Season
November to May — Floodplains turn into vast lakes; most camps close from November to May.
Monthly Visitor Guide
Dry, sunny winter months (June–August) followed by intense pre-rain heat in September and October (up to 35°C / 95°F).

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines
Operational Advisory
Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.
Katavi is a true wilderness with very high densities of large, potentially aggressive animals (hippos, buffalo, elephants, and lions). Always follow your guide's instructions, and ensure walking safaris are accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger.
🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory
Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
