Overview & Highlights
Kilwa Kisiwani, situated on an island off Tanzania's southern coast, is one of the most awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage sites in Africa. From the 11th to the early 16th century, the Sultanate of Kilwa stood as the preeminent commercial empire of the Indian Ocean, controlling the gold trade from Great Zimbabwe and Sofala and minting its own copper and gold currency. When Moroccan scholar Ibn Battuta visited in 1331, he declared Kilwa 'one of the most beautiful and well-constructed cities in the world.' The sprawling ruins include the Great Mosque of Kilwa — whose vaulted coral stone roof and sixteen domed bays once formed the largest mosque in sub-Saharan Africa — and the magnificent cliffside Palace of Husuni Kubwa, an opulent 14th-century royal compound encompassing over 100 rooms and an iconic sunken octagonal swimming pool. Guarding the harbor is the Gereza, an imposing coral-rag defensive fort built by the Portuguese and later reconstructed by the Omani Sultanate.

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines
Operational Advisory
Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.
Kilwa Kisiwani is an exceptionally safe and serene island destination with virtually zero crime. Visits to the ruins require a mandatory Antiquities Department permit and an authorized local guide, which can be easily obtained at the cultural office in Kilwa Masoko. The short 15-minute boat crossing across the channel should be made on a licensed motorized dhow equipped with life vests. The tropical sun on the island is strong and shade is limited between monuments; carry at least 1.5 liters of drinking water, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen.
🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory
Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
