Overview & Highlights
Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Africa's most breathtaking and remote wildernesses. Rising dramatically to 2,462m (Mount Nkungwe) straight out of the crystal-clear, turquoise depths of Lake Tanganyika, the jagged Mahale range shelters dense lowland jungle, alpine bamboo forests, and over 800 wild eastern chimpanzees. The habituated 'Mimikire' (M-Group) community of roughly 60 chimps has been studied by Japanese researchers since 1965. With zero roads inside its 1,650 km² boundaries, powdery white-sand coves lapped by freshwater waves, and iconic barefoot luxury camps like Greystoke Mahale, it offers arguably the ultimate primate and beach safari experience on Earth.

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines
Operational Advisory
Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.
Mahale is completely roadless and exceptionally safe. All forest treks are guided by skilled TANAPA rangers and camp trackers. Surgical masks are required during close chimpanzee observation to protect the apes from human pathogens.
🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory
Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
