Overview & Highlights
Mikumi National Park is Tanzania's fourth-largest national park (3,230 km²) and the most accessible wildlife sanctuary from Dar es Salaam. Framed by the misty Uluguru Mountains to the northeast and the Rubeho and Udzungwa ranges to the west, the park's centerpiece is the expansive Mkata Floodplain — often compared to the Serengeti for its open golden grasslands dotted with Borassus palms, tamarind trees, and fever acacias. Sharing the wider Selous/Nyerere ecosystem, Mikumi supports massive herds of Cape buffalo, plains zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, and elephants, alongside tree-climbing lions and rare eland, making it the premier gateway to Tanzania's Southern Circuit.

Highlights & Key Activities
- Game drives across the open Mkata Floodplain with Uluguru Mountain vistas
- Watching bloated pods of hippos and crocodiles at the Chamgore and Mkata Hippo Pools
- Spotting herds of giant eland, greater kudu, and Lichtenstein's hartebeest
- Over 400 bird species including lilac-breasted rollers and bateleur eagles
What We Love
- Open Mkata Floodplain guarantees reliable, high-visibility wildlife viewing
- Easily accessible by road or SGR train + short transfer from Dar es Salaam
- Spectacular mountain backdrops of the Uluguru and Udzungwa ranges
- Great sightings of eland (Africa's largest antelope), sable antelope, and lions
- Ideal for combining with Udzungwa Mountains National Park (1 hour away)
Keep in Mind
- The paved TANZAM highway bisects the park, bringing truck traffic along the main road
- Southern miombo woodland sections are rarely visited due to limited tracks

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines
Operational Advisory
Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.
Mikumi is very safe and well-patrolled by TANAPA rangers. While the TANZAM A7 highway passes through a section of the park, all game-viewing tracks on the Mkata Floodplain are strictly restricted to registered safari vehicles. Never exit your vehicle outside designated picnic sites or the Chamgore hippo pools.
🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory
Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
