Ol Doinyo Lengai

Overview & Highlights

Northern Circuit

Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,962m / 9,718ft) — revered as the sacred 'Mountain of God' by the pastoral Maasai — rises in a symmetrical, ash-streaked cone above the scorching floor of the Great Rift Valley just south of Lake Natron. It is a geological marvel: the only active volcano on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava. This rare, silica-free lava erupts at relatively cool temperatures (500–600°C), glowing dark black by day and orange by night before solidifying into snow-white mineral crusts upon contact with moisture in the air. Climbers begin their steep, unroped ascent around midnight under a canopy of stars to avoid the daytime heat, reaching thesmoking summit crater rim at dawn for a 360-degree panorama encompassing Lake Natron, the Ngorongoro Highlands, and Kilimanjaro.

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines

Operational Advisory

Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.

Ol Doinyo Lengai is one of East Africa's steepest and most physically demanding treks, ascending 1,600 vertical meters in just 5–6 hours over loose volcanic ash and gullies. Climbs must be led by an experienced local Maasai mountain guide, starting around midnight with headlamps, trekking poles, a helmet, and at least 3–4 liters of water.

🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory

Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
