Overview & Highlights
Paje Beach, on Zanzibar's southeastern coast, is the undisputed kitesurfing and water-sports capital of East Africa. Protected by a barrier reef 1.5 km offshore, the wide turquoise lagoon transforms with the rhythm of the tides: at high tide, waist-deep, mirror-flat warm water and steady side-onshore Kusi (June–September) and Kaskazi (December–February) trade winds create a playground for beginner and pro kitesurfers alike; at low tide, locals harvest organic Eucheuma seaweed and travelers walk out to coral lagoons and the nearby Jozani Forest.

Highlights & Key Activities
- Kitesurfing and wing-foiling in a shallow, crystal-clear turquoise lagoon
- Visit the Seaweed Center women's cooperative in Paje to see organic seaweed soap making
- Day trip to Jozani Forest (20 mins away) to see endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkeys
- Lunch at the iconic Rock Restaurant in nearby Michamvi Pingwe
What We Love

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines
Operational Advisory
Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.
Paje has a welcoming, laid-back barefoot vibe. When wading in the outer lagoon near reef edges at low tide, wear reef shoes to avoid sea urchins.
🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory
Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
