Rubondo Island National Park

Overview & Highlights

Lake Zone

Rubondo Island National Park is a secret tropical island ark floating in the southwestern corner of Lake Victoria. Spanning 457 km² (including 11 smaller satellite islets), over 80% of Rubondo is cloaked in dense, virgin equatorial rainforest broken by papyrus swamps and rocky sandy coves. In the 1960s, renowned German conservationist Professor Bernhard Grzimek transformed the uninhabited island into a sanctuary for endangered species, introducing chimpanzees (whose descendants now thrive as a wild, habituable population of over 50 apes), giraffes, elephants, and black-and-white colobus monkeys alongside native amphibious sitatunga antelopes, spotted-necked otters, hippos, and monster Nile perch.

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines

Operational Advisory

Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.

Rubondo Island has zero apex terrestrial predators (no lions or leopards), making forest walks very safe under the guidance of TANAPA rangers. However, the lakeshore waters harbor large hippos and Nile crocodiles, so swimming in Lake Victoria is not permitted.

🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory

Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
