Mount Meru (4,562m / 14,968ft) is Tanzania's second-highest peak and the dramatic centerpiece of Arusha National Park. Often overshadowed by its giant neighbor Kilimanjaro 70 km to the east, Meru is prized by experienced trekkers as an even more scenic and thrilling climb. Roughly 7,800 years ago, a colossal volcanic blast blew away the mountain's eastern wall, leaving behind a sheer 1,500-meter horseshoe cliff face and a surreal inner Ash Cone. Climbing Meru begins with a walking safari on the lower slopes among giraffes, Cape buffalo, and colobus monkeys (accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger), before ascending along the knife-edge crater rim to Socialist Peak for arguably the greatest sunrise view of Kilimanjaro in existence.

Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.
Because the lower slopes of Mount Meru harbor wild Cape buffalo and elephants, every trekking group is accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger from Momella Gate to Miriakamba and Saddle Huts. All climbers sleep in comfortable A-frame mountain dormitories.

Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
