Scuba Diving — Mafia Island

Overview & Highlights

Coastal

Mafia Island is the crown jewel of marine conservation in the Western Indian Ocean. Lying 160 km south of Zanzibar across the nutrient-rich waters of the Rufiji River Delta, over half of Mafia's coastline is protected within the 822 km² Mafia Island Marine Park — Tanzania's first and largest marine park. Far removed from mass tourism, Mafia is world-famous for two extraordinary phenomena: from October to March, resident whale sharks (the world's largest fish, reaching up to 12 meters) gather off Kilindoni to feed on plankton blooms, allowing ethical small-boat snorkeling encounters; inside Chole Bay, untouched coral gardens shelter over 460 species of reef fish, giant groupers, rays, and nesting green and hawksbill sea turtles.

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines

Operational Advisory

Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.

Mafia Island is peaceful, community-oriented, and very safe. All whale shark excursions operate under strict conservation codes (no touching, flash photography, or crowding the sharks). Strong tidal currents occur outside Chole Bay during spring tides, so dives are timed with slack tide by PADI dive masters.

🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory

Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
