Mikindani is a hidden historical gem curving around a sheltered, heart-shaped coral bay on Tanzania's far southern coast near Mtwara. Settled by Arab traders in the 9th century and later fortified by Omani and German colonial administrations, Mikindani was the starting point for Dr. David Livingstone's final inland expedition in March 1866. Today, its hillside 1895 German Boma has been lovingly restored as The Old Boma Heritage Hotel overlooking the bay's dhow anchorage, while just down the coast lies the pristine 650 km² Mnazi Bay–Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park.
