The Kaole Ruins, situated 5 km south of Bagamoyo beside a tranquil mangrove-fringed ocean creek, represent one of the oldest and most significant archaeological settlements along the East African Swahili Coast. Established in the early 13th century by Shirazi settlers from the Persian Gulf, Kaole flourished as an elite trading city-state long before Bagamoyo rose to prominence. The archaeological site features the stone remains of two coral rag mosques — including one considered by historians to be the oldest standing mosque in East Africa — and an extensive cemetery containing over 30 tombs. Among these are four monumental pillar tombs adorned with recessed Chinese celadon porcelain bowls. Overlooking the sacred grounds is an ancient baobab tree and a natural freshwater well that, according to local legend, has never run dry and possesses healing properties.

When visiting the edge of the mangrove lagoon, be mindful of the incoming tide and bring insect repellent during late afternoon visits.
