Lake Natron is one of the most surreal and otherworldly landscapes on planet Earth. Stretching 56 km along the floor of the Gregory Rift Valley beneath the smoking cone of Ol Doinyo Lengai, this shallow, hyper-alkaline soda lake (with a pH reaching 10.5 and water temperatures up to 40°C) is fed by mineral-rich hot springs. Photosynthetic haloarchaea and cyanobacteria thrive in the caustic brine, painting the evaporative salt crusts in hypnotic shades of crimson, magenta, and burnt orange. While hostile to most predators, these alkaline flats serve as the sole regular breeding ground in East Africa for 2.5 million lesser flamingos (75% of the global population), which build mud-cone nests on seasonal soda islands between August and November.
