Chimpanzee Trekking — Gombe Stream

Overview & Highlights

Western Circuit

Gombe National Park is a jewel of primate conservation on the wild eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika. Covering just 56 km² of steep forested valleys plunging down to sandy lake coves, it is Tanzania's smallest national park — yet globally renowned as the site where Dr. Jane Goodall began her pioneering behavioral research on wild chimpanzees in 1960. Accessible only by boat from Kigoma, Gombe offers an intimate, vehicle-free wilderness experience where visitors trek through lush gallery forests alongside habituated Kasekela chimpanzee families, olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and red colobus monkeys, before cooling off in the crystal-clear freshwater waves of Africa's deepest lake.

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines

Operational Advisory

Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.

Gombe is completely safe and vehicle-free. All chimpanzee treks are led by experienced TANAPA trackers. To protect the chimpanzees from human respiratory illnesses (to which they have no immunity), visitors must wear a surgical mask when within 10 meters of the chimps and maintain the mandatory viewing distance.

🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory

Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
