Katavi National Park

Overview & Highlights

Western Circuit

Katavi National Park is Tanzania's wildest frontier — an untamed 4,471 km² sanctuary tucked inside a truncated arm of the Western Rift Valley. Fed by the seasonal Katuma River, which links the shallow expanses of Lake Katavi and Lake Chada across the vast Katisunga Floodplain, the park transforms dramatically during the dry season (July to October). As the floodwaters recede into shrinking mud wallows, up to 6,000 hippos cram into single pools in fierce territorial battles, giant Nile crocodiles excavate mud caves along the riverbanks, and mega-herds of up to 3,000 Cape buffalo are stalked by massive prides of lions and spotted hyenas. Receiving fewer than 1,500 visitors per year, Katavi delivers raw, pre-colonial Africa in complete solitude.

Best Time & Climate

Katavi is strictly a dry-season destination (June to October). The later in the dry season you visit (August–October), the more concentrated and dramatic the wildlife scenes become.

☀️ Dry Season

June to October — Shrinking water sources pull all wildlife into the Katuma River and Lake Chada floodplains.

🌧️ Wet Season

November to May — Floodplains turn into vast lakes; most camps close from November to May.

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines

Operational Advisory

Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.

Katavi is a true wilderness with very high densities of large, potentially aggressive animals (hippos, buffalo, elephants, and lions). Always follow your guide's instructions, and ensure walking safaris are accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger.

🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory

Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.

1. 'Nothing prepares you for Katavi in September. We watched over 800 hippos packed wall-to-wall in the Katuma channel while a pride of 16 lions took down a buffalo on the bank. Not another vehicle in sight all week!' (Rating: 5/5, Date: September 2026)

2. 'Chada Katavi is the quintessential bush camp. Walking under the giant tamarind trees and fly-camping on Lake Chada was pure safari perfection.' (Rating: 5/5, Date: August 2026).
