Overview & Highlights
Mkomazi National Park is a dramatic 3,245 km² semi-arid savannah sanctuary stretching along Tanzania's northern border with Kenya, where it forms a contiguous transfrontier ecosystem with Tsavo West National Park. Framed by the Pare and Usambara Mountains to the south and snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro to the northwest, Mkomazi is Tanzania's flagship conservation stronghold for two critically endangered species: the eastern black rhinoceros (protected within the fenced Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary) and the African wild dog. Beyond the Big Five, Mkomazi is the best place in Tanzania to encounter dry-country northern ‘specials’ including the long-necked gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu, and vulturine guineafowl.

Highlights & Key Activities
- Track critically endangered eastern black rhinos at the Mbula Rhino Sanctuary
- Spot long-necked gerenuks, fringe-eared oryx, and spiral-horned lesser kudu
- Visit the African Wild Dog conservation project founded with the George Adamson Trust
- Watch hundreds of elephants, zebras, and buffalo congregate at Dindira Dam

- Rare arid-adapted species: gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx, and lesser kudu
- African wild dog breeding and reintroduction center at Kisima
- Panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Pare & Usambara Mountains
