Overview & Highlights
Saadani National Park (1,100 km²) is East Africa's only wildlife sanctuary bordering the Indian Ocean — a magical meeting place where bush and beach collide. Located on the historic Swahili coast between Dar es Salaam and Tanga (directly across the Zanzibar Channel), Saadani is the only place in Tanzania where you can watch elephants, giraffes, waterbucks, and reedbucks strolling along palm-fringed white-sand beaches at dawn, take a afternoon river boat safari through the mangrove-lined Wami River estuary among hippos and crocodiles, and fall asleep to the sound of Indian Ocean waves.

Highlights & Key Activities
- Spot giraffes, elephants, and waterbucks against the turquoise Indian Ocean backdrop
- Boat safari along the mangrove-lined Wami River for hippos, crocodiles, and flamingos
- Visit the Madete Beach Green Turtle breeding and hatching sanctuary
- Snorkel and swim at offshore Mafui Sandbank during low tide
What We Love

- Green turtle nesting sanctuary at Madete Beach
- Just a 15-minute flight from Zanzibar or Bagamoyo — ideal short safari add-on

Keep in Mind
- Dense coastal bush can make spotting predators (lions and leopards) challenging
- Access tracks can become muddy during the April–May heavy rains

Safety, Malaria & Guidelines
Operational Advisory
Always obey local safety parameters, environmental codes of conduct, and instructions from park rangers or guides.
Saadani is safe and family-friendly. Because wildlife roams freely across the beach zones inside the park, avoid walking along deserted beach stretches after dark without camp staff or a ranger.
🦟 Malaria & Health Advisory
Malaria is present in most wildlife reserves in Tanzania. It is strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic for antimalarial prescription. Use mosquito repellent containing DEET and wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothes in the evening.
