Nungwi Beach

Overview & Highlights

Zanzibar

Nungwi Beach sits at the northernmost tip of Unguja (Zanzibar Island), where coral cliffs give way to sweeping crescents of powder-white sand and gin-clear turquoise water. Because the northern tip drops quickly into deeper channel waters without a wide shallow reef flat, Nungwi enjoys nearly tide-free, all-day swimming — a rarity on Zanzibar. Beyond its palm-lined resorts and lively beachfront cafes, Nungwi remains the island's traditional dhow-building capital, where master craftsmen shape mahogany and mango-wood hulls on the beach using hand adzes and coconut-fiber caulking, and white triangular sails fill the western horizon every evening at sunset.
