General Health, Safety & Etiquette
- Stone Town is generally safe, but pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas. Keep your phone and wallet secure.
- Zanzibar is a Muslim society; dress respectfully. Cover shoulders and knees when in public spaces, Stone Town streets, and local villages. Wearing swimwear is fine on the beach/resort but not in towns.
- Only drink bottled or purified water. Avoid street food that has been sitting out, and choose busy stalls where food is cooked fresh in front of you.
- Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance. As of late 2025, the Zanzibar government mandates a specific local health insurance coverage for all incoming tourists.
